Janík, Pavol: Wiser for Your Death (Múdrejší o tvoju smrť in English)

Portre of Janík, Pavol

Múdrejší o tvoju smrť (Slovak)

(Miroslavovi Válkovi)

Korene vrastajú do zeme ako rakvy,
operní speváci
zvukomalebne kloktajú na javisku,
búrka ženie vlny na breh kaluže.

To všetko v prvom okamihu
po zabudnutí na objavenie Ameriky.

Na dne svojej duše
si každý opravuje vlastný Titanic.

Nočná obloha sa sype na zem
ako trblietavý sneh.

A mŕtvi zostávajú s nami,
nemí ako výčitky.

Wiser for Your Death (English)

(for Miroslav Válek)

Roots grow into the earth like coffins,
Opera singers
sound-painterly gargle on the stage,
a storm drives waves to the shores of a puddle.

All at the first moment
of the forgetting of the discovery of America.

At the bottom of their souls
everybody repairs their own Titanic.

The night sky spills itself on the ground
like sparkling snow.

And the dead remain with us
dumb as reproaches.
