Nemes Nagy Ágnes: Crime (Bűn in English)

Portre of Nemes Nagy Ágnes

Back to the translator

Bűn (Hungarian)

Kit megbüntettek bűntelen,
elhagyja azt az értelem,
mint egy vakablakot.
De érdemelt-e több napot?
Bűntelen, aki élt?
Az ásványok ártatlanok,
s ártatlan a herélt.
S kin égett egy égboltnyi láng,
az lesz a legvakabb szilánk,
s még azt se tudja: mért?

Crime (English)

The punished who were innocent of crimes
have lost their senses, their minds
like a blind window. Still,
was the sentence sufficient?
Is one who has lived innocent?
Minerals are innocent.
The eunuch is innocent.
And the one whose flames burned to the sky
is the blindest splinter of all
and does not know why.
