Borges, Jorge Luis: The dream (Whenever the clocks…) (El sueño (Cuando los relojes…) in English)

Portre of Borges, Jorge Luis
Portre of anonim

Back to the translator

El sueño (Cuando los relojes…) (Spanish)

resignado y sonriente.

The dream (Whenever the clocks…) (English)

Whenever the clocks of midnight fritter away

time generously,

I will go farther away than Ulysses’s sea dogs

to the dream dominion, inaccessible

to the human memory.

From that submerged territory I recover remains

which I have not finished understanding:

plants of a simple botany,

animals of some diversity,

dialogues with the dead,

faces that are really masks,

words of very ancient languages

and at times a horror incomparable

to that which the day can give us.

I will be everybody or nobody. I will be the other

who I am without knowing it, he who has peered into

that other dream, my wakefulness. He assesses it,

resigned and smiling.
