Williams, William Carlos: De jungle (The Jungle in Dutch)

Portre of Williams, William Carlos

The Jungle (English)

It is not the still weight
of the trees, the
breathless interior of the wood,
tangled with wrist-thick

vines, the flies, reptiles,
the forever fearful monkeys
screaming and running
in the branches –

                               but
a girl waiting
shy, brown, soft-eyed –
to guide you
                       Upstairs, sir.

De jungle (Dutch)

Niet het stille gewicht
van de bomen, het
bladstille binnenste van het woud,
vervlochten met vuistdikke

lianen, niet de vliegen, reptielen,
de eeuwig verschrikte apen
krijsend en rennend
over de takken –

                                      maar
een meisje dat wacht
schuchter, bruin, met zachte ogen –
om je mee te nemen
                       De trap op, meneer.
