Mandel, Eli: Estevan, 1934

Portre of Mandel, Eli

Estevan, 1934 (English)

remembering the family we
called breeds the Roques
their house smelling of urine
my mother's prayers before
the dried fish she cursed
them for their dirtiness their
women I remember too
seldom they spoke and
they touched one another

even when the sun killed
cattle and rabbis
in poisoned slow air
like hunters
                  like lizards
they touched stone
they touched

Estevan, 1934 (Hungarian)

eszembe jut a Roque-
család mint a nyulak
mondtuk húgyszagú házuk
s a szárított hal fölött
anyám imája piszkosak
átkozta őket emlékszem
asszonyaikra is
szóltak és ritkán
értek egymáshoz

még akkor is mikor a napfény
rabbit és nyájat ölt
a mérgezett légben is
nem értek csak kőhöz
nem értek csak
