Johnson, Samuel: Idill (Idyll in Hungarian)

Portre of Johnson, Samuel
Portre of Gergely Ágnes

Back to the translator

Idyll (English)

"Hermit hoar, in solemn cell,

Wearing out life's evening gray,

Smite thy bosom, sage, and tell,

What is bliss, and which the way ? "

Thus I spoke and speaking sigh’d,

Scarce repressed the starting tear ;

When the willing sage reply’d—

"Come, my lad; and drink some beer ! "

Idill (Hungarian)

Ősz remete, cellád ölén,

e léted nyűvő estelen

- szavadra, jó Bölcs! - kérdlek én:

mi a boldogság, s hol lelem?

Így szólék, s keblem epede,

könnyem is elcsorranna már,

de szól az ősz, bölcs remete:

„Jer, fiam, egy kis sört igyál."
