Ferlinghetti, Lawrence: Ne hagyd, hogy azt a hegedűt . . . (Don’t Let That Horse . . . in Hungarian)

Portre of Ferlinghetti, Lawrence

Don’t Let That Horse . . . (English)

Don't let that horse
                          eat that violin

  cried Chagall's mother

                             But he
                 kept right on
                             painting

And became famous

And kept on painting
The Horse With Violin In Mouth

And when he finally finished it
he jumped up upon the horse
                                 and rode away
        waving the violin

And then with a low bow gave it
to the first naked nude he ran across

And there were no strings
                                attached

Ne hagyd, hogy azt a hegedűt . . . (Hungarian)

Ne hagyd, hogy azt a hegedűt
                                     megegye az a ló

   Chagall anyja így sírt

                            De ő
                 csak festett
                          tovább

És híres lett

És csak festette tovább
                       A Lovat Hegedűvel A Szájában

És mikor végül befejezte
felpattant a lóra
              és tovalovagolt
     a hegedűt lengetve

Majd mély meghajlással átadta azt
az első mezítelen aktnak, akibe belebotlott

És a hegedűnek nem voltak
                                húrjai
