Day Lewis, Cecil: Where Are The War Poets?

Portre of Day Lewis, Cecil

Where Are The War Poets? (English)

They who in folly or mere greed

Enslaved religion, markets, laws,

Borrow our language now and bid

Us to speak up in freedom’s cause.

It is the logic of our times,

No subject for immortal verse –

That we who lived by honest dreams

Defend the bad against the worse.

Hol vannak a háborús költők? (Hungarian)

Akik mohón, őrjöngve leigázták

a jogot, vallást, piacot – manapság

a szavainkból élnek s azt kívánják,

mi is fennszóval hirdessük: „Szabadság!"

Korunknak logikája lett az érvünk,

de nincs helye örökérvényű versben,

hogy akik tiszta álmainkban éltünk,

a rosszat védjük a még rosszabb ellen.
